Delhi CM yet to grapple with ministers' resignations

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Though Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit had claimed that she would be able to sort out the matter relating to the resignation of her six cabinet colleagues by Monday evening, she is yet to make up her mind on whether to accept the resignations or not.

According to insiders, Dikshit had wanted only two of her cabinet colleagues - namely Food and Civil Supplies Minister Yoganand Shastri and Social Welfare Minister Krishna Tirath - to resign.

Hence, she was taken by surprise when all her cabinet colleagues tendered their resignations.

Though she met Congress president Sonia Gandhi a number of times in the last four days, she is yet get a go ahead for the formation of a new cabinet.

So far, Dikshit has not even forwarded the resignations to Lt Governor Vijay Kapur and her cabinet colleagues continue to discharge their duties as ministers, one of her detractors said.

At one stage, there was a strong rumour that she had threatened to step down because of interference by Kamal Nath, in-charge of Delhi affairs in the Congress party and also known within the party as the super chief minister of Delhi.

While Dikshit wants only two ministers to be replaced, Kamal Nath wants at least four to go. Health Minister Dr A K Walia and Education Minister Narendra Nath are the additions in Nath's list.

Dropping two of her cabinet colleagues, with Sonia Gandhi's approval, would not have placed her in as big a mess as she finds herself in now, Dikshit's detractors said.

Dikshit wants to induct Ajay Maken into the ministry, one ministerial aspirant said.
