Calcutta blast accused sentenced to life imprisonment

J Saagar in Calcutta

A special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) court on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment Mohammad Rashid Khan and five of his associates in connection with the Bowbazar blast case in Calcutta.

Sixty-nine people had died in the blast, which took place on March 16, 1993.

The bombs were kept in a room, which was a part of a satta den (gambling). Rashid Khan was a leading satta don and an influential person at the time of the blast.

Special TADA court Judge P K Deb had held Rashid and his associates guilty on Thursday under section 120B of the Indian Penal Code, Sections 3 and 5 of the Explosives Substance Act and Sections 3(2)(1) and 3(3) of the TADA Act.

Defence lawyer, Ganesh Maity and Abu Bakr Dhali told reporters that the family of all the accused would be filing an appeal against the judgement within 30 days in the Supreme court.

The West Bengal government ordered a red alert in the state following the judgement.
