India to support Iraq in getting UN embargo lifted

India on Thursday reiterated its support to Iraq, a traditional friend, especially in getting the United Nations embargo lifted.

This assurance was given by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee when a delegation of Friendship Peace Organisation, which is visiting Iraq, called on him in Delhi.

Vajpayee said the continuous suffering of Iraqi people for over a decade should be ended immediately, according to a press release from the organisation.

It said the prime minister also reiterated India's support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq as also the welfare of its people.

The nine-member delegation is being led by its secretary general A K Zaimuddin.
