Netaji's school languishes due to neglect

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

The historic Ravenshaw Collegiate School, the alma mater of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, has been languishing in gross neglect for a long time due to apathy of the state as well as the Centre.

The school is not only facing acute shortage of staff, the building itself, which has only 23 classrooms for over 1000 students, is in a dilapidated condition.

"Though four rooms were declared unsafe two years ago, students continue to sit in those rooms," sources in the school said.

School headmaster Rudra Narayan Mohanty told rediff.com that the situation has come to such a pass that the school authorities are compelled to allow students to play in teaching periods.

Besides, as many as seven important teaching posts have been lying vacant for years, he said. Despite repeated requests to the authorities, no action has been taken to fill them up, he added.

Established in 1822, the school was one of the premier schools in the state.

Like Netaji's house in Cuttack, which is yet to get the status of National Monument, the school is also waiting to be declared a National school.

It may be recalled that last year two senior Union Ministers, Sushma Swaraj and Venkaiah Naidu, had announced initiation of steps to declare the school a National School, but nothing has materialised till date.
