Mahanta scandal: Graft bureau freezes Bharali's accounts

The Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau on Tuesday froze four bank accounts of Sanghamitra Bharali, who had claimed that she had secretly married former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta in Bombay.

Bharali's accounts, three in Guwahati and one in Bombay, were being scrutinised. The bureau also sought certain clarifications from her on Tuesday.

Officials of the bureau said Bharali had not been interrogated but certain "statements and clarifications" regarding her property had been sought.

A raid at Bharali's flat in Bombay on Monday led to the seizure of 25 tolas of gold and also documents of two flats in her name, one in Bombay and another in Guwahati.

Besides the flats, Bharali also owned two Maruti Zen cars, sources said.

On August 24, Mahanta had filed two defamation suits of Rs 50 million each against two Guwahati newspapers for publishing reports about his alleged second marriage to Bharali.
