NCERT initiatives aimed at
quality upgradation: Govt

Faced with criticism over 'saffronisation' of the education system, the government on Wednesday said the initiatives taken by the National Council of Educational Research and Training and the University Grants Commission in school and higher education have been aimed at bringing about quality upgradation.

Making a statement in the Rajya Sabha on the recent circulars of NCERT and UGC, Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi said the actions taken by the two educational bodies have been in pursuance of and within the parameters of the National Policy on Education.

"Currently, NCERT is engaged in the task of developing new curricular material, including textbooks. So far, no such curricular material has been finalised," Joshi said.

Stating that a Discussion Document on Curriculum Framework was published in January last year and it was widely disseminated to state education ministers and all functionaries of state-level agencies dealing with school education, he said based on the inputs received, NCERT finalised the National Curriculum Framework in November 2000.

The framework was also discussed in two conferences of state education secretaries held in November 1999 and April 2001, Joshi said.
