21 get life imprisonment in Bhagalpur riots case

Twenty-one persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment in a case pertaining to the communal riots in Bhagalpur in 1989.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Mahendra Narayan Singh, in a packed courtroom on Tuesday, pronounced the 21 accused guilty of killing five persons and abducting four others at Chara Bargaon village of Bhagalpur district on October 28, 1989.

The accused were part of a mob that raided the village and engaged in large-scale violence and arson in which several houses belonging to a particular community and a place of worship were set ablaze.

Nearly 1,000 persons were killed in the riots.
