'Ram temple will be constructed'

Sheela Bhatt in New Delhi

Though the Congress on Monday termed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's statement on Ayodhya as "untrue and misleading", his party members from Uttar Pradesh are jubilant.

"The prime minister has said the right thing. His statement will appeal to the people," UP Bharatiya Janata Party president and Rajya Sabha MP Kalraj Mishra told rediff.com

Vajpayee had on Sunday said that talks were on to resolve the Ayodhya issue and that a solution would be found by March next year.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, which intends to start the construction of the temple at the disputed site, had set a deadline of March 12 to resolve the dispute.

"We will remove all obstacles in the building of the temple. There is no question of any dispute as the temple is already there," Mishra said.

"For us, Ayodhya is a national issue and not a political issue. We have a promise to keep, he said.

"When the prime minister says a solution will be found soon, the issue should be considered solved."

When asked what prompted Vajpayee to raise the issue, he said, "The prime minister wanted to start a debate. He spoke on Ayodhya so that people come to know of his efforts. He did the right thing."

"The prime minister spoke on Ayodhya so that the people begin to take us seriously," he said when asked if Vajpayee was addressing the Hindu vote bank in UP.
