Police files case against Phoolan's husband, relatives

Concerned over the tirades between Umed Singh and relatives of slain Samajwadi Party MP Phoolan Devi over her property, the Delhi police on Monday filed a case before a city court seeking an undertaking from the warring parties to maintain peace.

After preliminary hearing, Special Executive Magistrate Mahender Kumar Mehni adjourned the case till September 10.

The counsel for Phoolan's husband, R K Garg, had moved an application seeking Umed Singh's personal exemption stating that he was on fast unto death demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the murder of his wife.

The police had made Phoolan's relatives, including her mother Mulla Bai and sister Munni Devi, as respondent in the case.

Differences over claim to Phoolan's property had come to the fore on August 1 when Umed Singh announced the formation of a trust.

Munni Devi alleged that Umed Singh had another wife and two daughters and that he had married Phoolan for her property.

The police had to intervene when the two sides resorted to violence.
