Slain ex-MLA's daughter held for family's murder

Sonia, daughter of slain former Haryana legislator Relu Ram Punia, was arrested late on Sunday night and remanded to police custody till September 2, police said on Monday.

Sonia, 22, has confessed to having killed her father and seven other family members on Thursday.

She was produced before the duty magistrate, Naresh Singhal, at his residence.

There is, however, still no clue about her husband Sanjeev, who has probably gone into hiding.

A police party brought Sonia to Hissar on Sunday after she was discharged from a hospital where she was admitted following a suicide bid after she allegedly committed the crime for not being given her due share in her father's property.

The sources said police parties that had been sent to Faridabad in search of Sanjeev returned empty-handed.

Meanwhile, police have questioned Sanjeev's brother and are expecting some information on him soon.

Sonia in her statement before the magistrate stuck to her stand that she had killed her family members with an iron rod as she felt her father did not love her. "My father wanted me to get divorced from Sanjeev," she said.

She had consumed poison to end her life after allegedly committing the crime following a birthday party of her younger sister Priyanka on Thursday night at the family farmhouse in Litani village in this district.

Punia, his wife, daughter Priyanka, son Sunil, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren were done to death while they were sleeping on the night of August 23.
