Telangana Rashtra Samithi founder K Chandrasekhar Rao will seek re-election to the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly from his home constituency Siddipet in the bypolls scheduled on September 20.
The seat had fallen vacant when Chandrasekhar Rao quit the ruling Telugu Desam Party, deputy speaker's post and assembly membership on April 27 this year to form the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
The bypolls to Siddipet are being held along with Vuyyur constituency in Krishna district.
A decision to field Chandrasekhar Rao in the bypolls was taken by the TRS executive committee consisting of senior leaders here on Monday.
Senior leader and ex-MP M Narayana Reddy announced the decision and said, "with his re-entry into the assembly as TRS member, the issue of Telangana will be focussed at the national level and all national parties will take note of the demand for a separate state."
Chandrasekhar Rao was earlier elected to the assembly from Siddipet on Telugu Desam Party ticket for four terms from 1985 onwards.
He served as Transport Minister in N Chandrababu Naidu's cabinet during 1996-99.
He was re-elected to assembly in the 1999 polls with a majority of 27,555 votes over his Congress rival.
Incidentally, M Swamy Charan, his rival at that time, has since joined the TRS.
In the recent panchayat elections, the TRS bagged three mandals in the constituency while the Telugu Desam got one.
The TRS polled 50,000 votes more than the rival parties.
