One killed in police firing in Ahmedabad

One person was killed when the police opened fire to disperse two groups of people who clashed in the city's old quarters on Saturday, the police said.

Rioting continued for the second consecutive day prompting the police to fire five rounds and lob 50 teargas shells.

Tension prevailed at the Durga Mata lane and Nani Ali lane in the Dariyapur neighbourhood, where curfew was reimposed.

Violence erupted on Friday during a shutdown called by the Muslim Youth Association to protest an attack on hawkers in the Vatva industrial neighbourhood.

"The shutdown is for the awakening of the Muslim community," the association had said in a statement.

The police fired at least five rounds in the air and lobbed nearly 100 teargas shells to disperse rioting mob that burnt shops and vehicles during Friday's strike.

The Students Islamic Movement of India reportedly supported Friday's shutdown call.

Intelligence reports have attributed the current trouble to workers of political parties who are allegedly trying to make an impact ahead of the September 20 byelection to the Sabarmati assembly seat.
