Arafat in India on a brief visit

Palestine President Yasser Arafat arrived in Delhi on late Wednesday.

He is expected to discuss the volatile situation in the Middle East with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday, officials said.

Arafat would also call on President KR Narayanan before leaving for Beijing.

"We support a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region on the basis of relevant UN resolutions," an official of the external affairs ministry said.

India said that all countries in the region, including Palestine and Israel, have a right to exist within secure and internationally recognised borders.

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh spoke to Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres last week in the wake of the latest flare-up of violence following the bombing of a restaurant that left 16 people dead.

Arafat and Peres briefed Singh on the prevailing situation and on the peace moves initiated by the two sides.

Indian officials said both leaders also welcomed India's role in the region and re-affirmed their continued faith in New Delhi.

Arafat would call on Vajpayee at his residence at 10 am before meeting Narayanan at the Rashtrapati Bhavan or presidential palace at noon.
