External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on Sunday called on Nepal's King Gyanendra and offered deep condolences on the royal family massacre in which his brother King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and eight others were gunned down.
Before leaving for India, Singh said, ''During my meeting with His Majesty, I conveyed the condolences of the Government of India over the sad incident of June one."
''We in India have high appreciation for the Nepalese people for evincing rare courage and patience in dealing with the national tragedy,'' he said.
Singh, who concluded a three-day goodwill visit, said, ''I am happy to have had this opportunity to visit Nepal. My visit was very cordial and successful and I achieved more than I had expected."
On Nepali concerns over the construction of an embankment in Uttar Pradesh, which it apprehends could inundate Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and several villages in adjoining areas of the Himalayan kingdom, he said, "India will not do anything which harms the interest of Nepal."
