At least 12 people were feared killed, and more than 25 injured, when the Muzzaffarpur-Sealdah passenger train collided with six bogies of a goods train outside Girdhaur railway station, railway officials said on Thursday night.
The officials said that six bogies of a goods train broke free due to a defective coupling, and started rolling down the tracks. The Muzzaffarpur-Sealdah passenger train coming from the opposite direction rammed head-on into the bogies at around 8:30 pm, the officials added.
They said that six bodies have been recovered so far.
Incidentally, Girdhaur falls in the parliamentary constituency of Minister of State for Railways Digvijay Singh.
However, Inspector General, Railways, V Narayanan, put the toll at less than 10.
The district magistrate and the superintendent of police of Jamui district, where Girdhaur falls, have rushed to the spot.
Danapur Divisional Railway Manager S K Budlalakoti has left for Girdhaur.
