India committed to friendship with Pak: Vajpayee

In his first communication to Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf after the Agra summit, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has conveyed that New Delhi is committed to establishing a relationship of durable peace, friendship and cooperation with Islamabad in accordance with the Simla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration.

In a message extending good wishes on the occasion of Pakistan's Independence Day, Vajpayee said, "Our recent meetings in Agra have resumed the dialogue process between the two countries. I look forward to continuing our bilateral interaction."

Asked why there had been no mention of India's principal concern of cross- border terrorism in the prime minister's message, an external affairs ministry spokesperson said the message was on the occasion of Pakistan's Independence Day and ''should be read in that light''.

India's concerns on the issue remain and would be taken up at the next meeting, she said.
