Capital flooded, and more rains
are predicted

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Torrential downpours since late Monday night threw normal life out of gear in the national capital region of Delhi on Tuesday with streets flooded and traffic snarled.

According to the city weather office, 13 cms of rain had been recorded at 0600 hours (IST) and the clouded skies indicated that there would be no let up.

The water level in the Yamuna is above the danger level at 204.5 metres.

Residents in trans-Yamuna areas like Mayur Vihar, Vivek Vihar and Laxminagar had to wade through knee-deep water and office-goers had a tough time finding transportation.

Water logging in the streets forced many schools to declare a holiday on Tuesday and cancel pre-Independence Day plans.

Auto mechanics had a field day repairing cars, which had broken down on the Nizamuddin bridge and elsewhere. For once, they did not mind getting drenched to the skin.

It was the car owners who complained - about the exorbitant charges 'levied' by these mechanics.

The guardians of the law were all at sea with most streets flooded and traffic jams everywhere.

The harried traffic cops, many completely soaked, gallantly battled to restore order as frayed tempers threatened to break the peace and foul language flowed freely.

With Independence Day barely 24 hours away and threats of violent strikes by terrorists in the back of their minds, the city cops are keeping their fingers crossed.

However, Police Commissioner Ajay Raj Sharma expressed confidence that the police were fully equipped to meet any challenge.
