Outspoken Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam had written to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee expressing regret over his criticism of the Prime Minister's Office over the crisis at the Unit Trust of India.
The prime minister had on Monday refused to meet Shiv Sena leaders, who had sought an appointment with him, indicating that he had taken a serious view of Nirupam's criticism of the PMO's role in the UTI scam.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Nirupam's senior party colleague Union Heavy Industry Minister Manohar Joshi confirmed that Shiv Sena MPs, including Nirupam, had sought a meeting with the prime minister, which did not fructify.
"Thereafter, Nirupam wrote to the prime minister expressing regret over his recent remarks in the Rajya Sabha on the UTI issue and pointed out that he had no intention of hurting Vajpayee," Joshi said.
However, Joshi did not disclose the contents of the letter to mediapersons.
He also said that the allies were totally behind the prime minister and there was no question of any misunderstanding among them.
