Bihar Oppn demands high-level probe
into firing on flood victims

The opposition in Bihar on Tuesday described as 'unfortunate and unprovoked' the police firing on flood victims at Aurai police station in Muzaffarpur and demanded a high-level inquiry into it.

Three people were killed and nine injured when police opened fire on Monday to quell a rampaging mob of flood victims who had partially burnt the police station.

Opposition leader in the assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party leader S K Modi condemned the firing and demanded stringent action against the officials responsible for it.

Samata Party spokesman P K Sinha charged the state government with committing irregularities in providing relief materials to the flood-affected people. The government must institute a high-level inquiry into the firing and book the officials responsible for the 'inhuman' act, he said.

State Janata Dal-United general secretary Laxmi Sahu claimed that more than eight people had lost their lives in the police action and demanded that government provide an ex-gratia payment of Rs 500,000 to dependents of each of the deceased.

Communist Party of India-ML (liberation) has called for a bandh in Muzaffarpur on Wednesday to protest against the firing.
