Former navy chief dead

Former Indian Navy chief Admiral Adhar Kumar Chatterji, the first Indian to command the cruiser INS Delhi, died in New Delhi on Monday.

Born in 1914, Chatterji steered the Indian Navy from March 4, 1966, to February 28, 1970.

He entered the Royal Indian Navy in 1933 as the first cadet entry officer. As an anti-submarine warfare specialist, he saw active service during World War II, serving on various ships of the Royal Navy and Royal Indian Navy.

An alumnus of Britain's Royal Staff College, he held various positions at the naval headquarters and command levels. These included director of Naval Plans and Commandant of the National Defence College.

"Admiral Chatterji's contribution shall always remain etched in golden letters in the history of the Indian Navy," an official statement said.
