The body of a teenaged girl, who was allegedly raped and then smothered to death, was found along with the body of the prime suspect in a car parked in an east Delhi garage late on Tuesday.
Police said 30-year-old Dharmender, who allegedly sexually assaulted and smothered his 18-year-old sister-in-law, died later due to suffocation inside the car.
"The man raped and smothered the girl and within seconds died of asphyxiation. He had switched off the car's engine but left the air-conditioner running due to which carbon monoxide filled the car," Deputy Commissioner of Police Mangi Lal said.
"There is very little possibility of the involvement of a third person, but we are investigating all angles," he said.
Garment exporter Dharmender had picked up his wife's cousin from her school in east Delhi on Monday and driven the car to the garage of a building in the nearby West Kanti Nagar neighborhood that housed his storehouse, police said.
The suspect was heavily intoxicated at the time of assault, police said. It is suspected that Dharmender shut the girl's mouth to prevent her from shouting, but ended up smothering her.
"The suspect's body was found lying between the two front seats. It appears as though Dharmender, who was drunk, was making an effort to get out," he added.
The bodies were found late Tuesday night when Dharmender's brother came to the same garage to park his car. A case of rape-cum-murder has been registered.
