Eleven infants rescued from yet
another adoption home in Hyderabad

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Continuing their crackdown on adoption homes in and around Hyderabad, Child Welfare Department officials on Friday evening rescued 11 infants from yet another unrecognised children's home run by a voluntary agency taking the number of rescued infants to 184.

Child Welfare Deputy Director Pramodini Rani told rediff.com that a team of officials raided an adoption home run by Sparsh Welfare Society at Somajiguda and took custody of the 11 infants there. The institution did not have a licence to run an adoption centre.

The infants were shifted to the government-run Sishu Vihar children's home around 1800 hours (IST).

With this, the number of infants and children rescued since April 20 from seven unrecognized 'adoption homes' and 'hide-outs' has gone up to 184.

Pramodini Rani informed that a two-member Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA) team had inspected the adoption home on Thursday.

While Child Welfare Department officials found certain irregularities in the records maintained by Sparsh, the CARA team found nothing wrong with either the children or the records of the home.

Meanwhile, the Rangareddy district police has registered a criminal case against Anita Sen and her assistant Sarita for illegally running an adoption home 'Precious Moments' at Miyapur on the city outskirts from where Child Welfare Department officials rescued 61 infants and children on Thursday.

Anita Sen is the wife of a senior Indian Police Service officer, Swaranjit Sen.

The case refers to certain irregularities in the functioning of 'Precious Moments', particularly procurement of children for in-country and inter-country adoptions, and specially that it did not possess a license from CARA for facilitating adoptions.

The police registered the case under Sections 175, 188, 342, 40, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had told Child Welfare Department officials and the Rangareddy District Collector to shift the children from 'Precious Moments' children's home to Sishu Vihar and also asked the police to take stern action against the promoters of the home, 'however big they might be'.
