Seven persons were killed in violent incidents during the fifth round of Bihar's panchayat polls on Friday even as the state Election Commission reported a 65 per cent voter turnout. State Director General of Police R R Prasad, however, said only two deaths had been reported.
Two persons died in bomb explosions in Muzaffarpur district while one person each was killed in explosions in Saran and Samastipur districts. One person was killed in a group clash in Jamui district.
DGP Prasad told rediff.com that a booth-grabber was beaten to death by a mob in Khizersarai block of Gaya district and some arms were recovered from him. Another person was killed elsewhere in the district.
According to Prasad, more than 1,375 miscreants, including a candidate for the post of mukhia [village chief], were arrested on Friday and a large quantity of arms and ammunition and 2.5 kilos of explosives were recovered from them.
A woman mukhiya candidate died in Munger district of injuries sustained in an attack by some criminal elements on Thursday evening.
A polling magistrate posted in Harnaut block of Nalanda district was critically injured when some miscreants fired on him. He was rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital.
Large-scale violence and booth-grabbing were reported from many other places.
