Tension in Bihar town following
alleged desecration of shrine

Official sources said that the town observed a bandh as mobs took to the streets setting fire to tyres and wooden logs at major intersections and forcibly closing shops.

State's Director-General of Police R R Prasad said one company of the Bihar Military Police and additional reinforcements from adjoining Katihar district had reached the town to assist the local administration in maintaining peace.

Prasad described the situation as absolutely under control and added that large police contingents had been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain peace.

Prasad said unsubstantiated reports of liquor bottles and stones being thrown at a shrine in the Line Bazaar locality of Purnea, allegedly by processionists, triggered the tension.

Prasad said District Magistrate Arun Kumar Singh and Superintendent of Police K C Surendra Babu held a meeting with leaders of the two communities who, escorted by the police, took out a peace march on Thursday evening to restore normalcy.

Situation is under control and most shops opened in the evening, Prasad said.
