Cemetery flattened for playground in Gujarat

The All India Christian Council on Tuesday alleged that a cemetery belonging to Christians and Dalits in Khutaj village of Gujarat's Kheda district was razed to the ground to pave way for a playground.

Samson Christian of the Council wrote to President K R Narayanan seeking his intervention in bringing to book the culprits, who on March 31 razed over 100 graves in the combined cemetery for the two communities at the village.

He alleged that no action was taken to arrest the culprits though a complaint had been registered at the police station at Mahuda. He said a tractor was used to flatten the graveyard where the culprits sought to organise a cricket tournament beginning April two.

However, following the police complaint, the tournament was cancelled.

The organisers had claimed they were holding the tourney to collect funds for the cemetery.

Kheda district Superintendent of Police B D Vaghela told PTI over telephone that Deputy Superintendent of Police (scheduled castes and tribes) L S Nathani would investigation the matter. "Once it gets over, we will take action against the guilty," he added.

Vaghela said the inquiry was expected to be over in a day or two.

Copies of Samson's letter were also despatched to the prime minister, chief minister of Gujarat and others so as to bring to their notice the incident wherein 'some caste Hindus of the village rode roughshod over the sentiments of minority and Dalit communities', Samson said.
