Gujarat CM concedes defeat
in local bodies poll: PTI

Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel on Saturday night accepted the mandate of the people in elections to local bodies and acknowledged that it was not as expected by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

''There was something lacking to take the ( government's) positive work to the ballot boxes,'' he said.

Of 23 district panchayats which went to the polls, the Congress captured power in 21 district panchayats, with more than two-third majority.

Porbandar district panchayat went to the BJP and in Amreli the Congress and BJP were neck and neck with the Congress, winning 12 of 31 seats, BJP nine and one went to an Independent.

Patel said corrective measures would be taken to solve people's problems with more care.

Gujarat pradesh Congress committee president C D Patel demanded the resignation of the government by accepting the mandate of the people and said if their demand was not fulfilled, the party would be forced to launch an agitation to force it out of power.

In the elections to 24 taluka panchayat bodies, the Congress got a majority in 22 taluka panchayats, while the BJP won the Porbandar taluka panchayat with an absolute majority. In Amreli, of 183 seats, the Congress and the BJP got 76 each.
