EC derecognises CPI-M as national party

The Election Commission Saturday derecognised the Communist Party of India-Marxist as a national party.

The party would be recognised as a state party in three states - West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura.

The commission also froze the name and symbol of the Janata Dal, which split into two factions on the eve of the last general elections.

While freezing the party's name and the symbol, the commission recognised JD (United) faction led by Civil Aviation Minister Sharad Yadav as a state party in Bihar and Karnataka and JD (Secular) led by former prime minister H D Deve Gowda as a state party in Karnataka.
