Bofors case deferred till October 9

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The hearing of the Bofors case was deferred till October 9 by Additional District and Sessions Judge Ajit Bharihoke in Delhi on Friday morning.

The hearing was deferred after Judge Bharihoke agreed to the defence counsel's demand that they needed time for scrutinising documents.

The Central Bureau of Investigation is investigating allegations of kickbacks having been paid in the howitzer deal involving Swedish manufacturer AB Bofors and the Indian government.

The name of the Hinduja brothers had figured during this investigation. The Hindujas had, on Thursday, issued a statement from London, confirming receipt of funds from Bofors, but insisted that the money did not have any connection to the howitzer deal.

Former CBI chief Joginder Singh, who had been involved in the Bofors investigation, says the CBI should verify the authenticity of the statement as the Hindujas had not put forward this argument before. He also questioned the Hindujas' interest in blocking judicial proceedings in connection with the CBI investigation in Swiss courts if they had nothing to do with the deal.
