16 ultras, two officers among 20 killed in J&K

Sixteen militants and two securitymen were killed and six wounded in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, where militants shot dead two members of a family and triggered an explosion injuring two persons since Thursday evening.

Four militants were killed when police, assisted by Border Security Force and the army, raided a militant hideout at village Chewa in Pulwama district of south Kashmir Friday, an official spokesman said in Srinagar.

He said the incident occurred when security forces returned fire after being attacked by a group of militants hiding in a house.

The encounter lasted for nearly 12 hours and the house was damaged in the cross-fire.

A big cache of arms and ammunition, including five AK assault rifles, three pistols and two wireless sets, were recovered from the killed militants. The militants were identified as Mohammad Ashraf Wani code Junaid, Naseer Ahmad Malik (both local ultras), Imtiaz Bhai and Sher Bhai of Pakistan.

Three civilians were also injured in the encounter which broke out Thursday evening. The injured were hospitalised, the spokesman said.

Two militants and an assistant commandant of BSF were killed in another encounter at Cheli-Gool in Udhampur district Friday, official sources said.
