Rajan appears in court on stretcher: PTI

Alleged gangster Chhota Rajan, injured in a shootout in Bangkok last week, was brought to a Thai court amid tight security on Thursday, on a stretcher, to testify against rivals.

Rajan, charged with giving false information in a visa application and barred from leaving the country, looked pale as he was quickly taken into the courtroom on the stretcher hooked on to glucose bottles with armed policemen forming a ring around him.

Indian jeweller Michael D'Souza was killed and his wife Sangeeta and the gangster were injured in the September 15 shootout. Six persons, including Pakistani nationals, have been arrested in connection with the attack.

Sangeeta, deposing before the court, came in a wheelchair with both arms bandaged.

As the court proceedings began, a top Thai police official, Gen Chakthib, told PTI that the authorities were still awaiting a formal request from India for Rajan's extradition.

The authorities have found that Rajan, who had entered the country under the name of Vijay Daman, filed a false statement while requesting a change in his tourist visa to a business visa, police said. The offence carries six months' imprisonment or a fine.
