Navy launches fourth missile boat

Prabal, costing Rs 2.6 billion and belonging to 'Nashak' class of boats, was named and launched by Kaumudi, wife of Vice Admiral and Flag Officer commanding in chief, Western Naval command Madhavendra Singh.

Built four months ahead of schedule, the hull of the missile boat is built with low alloy special steel and the superstructure with an aluminium alloy. It is 56.10 metre long, 13.02 m wide with displacement of 477 tonnes, according to the chairman and managing director of Mazgoan Dock Limited, Commodore Harjeet Kang.

With 65 per cent indigenous components, the weapon package includes surface to surface missiles with associated surveillance system besides gun mountings, controlled by its search and attack system.

Prabal, an improved version of earlier three missile boats, has a hull weighing 50 tonnes more to accomodate the extended operation room and new compartments, besides installation of addtional equipment and systems to support new weapons configuration, Kang said.

It has 23,540 KW of propulsion and 500 KW of power generation capacity. When completed, it will have 60 km of cable and 5250 m of pipes spread throughout its hull.

Madhavendra Singh felicitated the senior workman C P Padwal on the occasion.
