Chidambaram among many held: PTI

Former Union ministers P Chidambaram, S R Balasubramaniam, Jayanthi Natarajan and Dhanuskhodi Athithan were among scores of Tamil Maanila Congress volunteers taken into custody from various parts of Tamil Nadu when they attempted to picket state government offices protesting against the state and central governments' 'anti-people' policies.

TMC spokesman B S Gnanadesikan and vice-president S G Vijayagamurthy told reporters in Madras that the picketing was ''peaceful, highly successful and beyond our expectations''.

Nearly 1.25 lakh party workers courted arrest in all 234 assembly constituencies of the state, they said.

While former finance minister Chidambaram was taken into custody at Karaikudi, Balasubramaniam and Jayanthi were taken into custody in the city and Athithan in Tiruchendur.

Gnanadesikan and Vinayagamurthy alleged that at Senthamangalam, in Namakkal district, police cane charged party volunteers. Two persons were injured in the incident, they claimed.

Police sources, however, said they had received no such report.
