Court to consider Sharief's request to summon Musharraf

A Pakistani high court on Tuesday said it would consider deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharief's application to summon military ruler General Pervez Musharraf in an appeal against his conviction for plane hijacking.

"We will first have to decide about the application before moving to other appeals," Syed Saeed Ashhad, chief justice of the Sindh high court, said.

The court will take up the issue on Wednesday, he said.

Ashhad is heading a panel of three judges hearing Sharief's appeal against his life sentence on hijacking and terrorism charges.

The defence and the prosecution concluded arguments in Sharief's appeal last week and the court was originally to start hearing on Tuesday a state appeal seeking to amend Sharief's sentence to the death penalty.

The prosecution has also filed an appeal against the acquittal of six co-accused, including Sharief's brother, Shahbaz.

However, the court has agreed to defer all further hearing in the state appeals until it has ruled on Sharief's application.

An anti-terrorism court on April six sentenced Sharief to life imprisonment for trying to stop a jet carrying Musharraf and 198 other passengers from landing in Pakistan, on the night of the October 12 coup.

Sharief's lawyer Azizullah Sheikh last week said the court should summon Musharraf and five other generals as court witnesses.
