Mahajan in Bombay to finalise PM's surgery details

It is now certain that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would undergo surgery at the Breach Candy hospital in South Bombay on October 10.

''This has been almost decided unless there are some last minute changes,'' Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan, who is in the city to oversee the arrangements for the prime minister's treatment, said on Tuesday.

The hospital has been chosen because the New York-based physician, Dr Chittranjan Ranawat, is comfortable with the staff at Breach Candy hospital, having performed operations there every year.

Tentatively, Vajpayee will arrive in Bombay on October 8, and the operation is scheduled for October 10. ''He may or may not go directly to the hospital. After the surgery the prime minister will remain in the hospital for four days and after that at the Raj Bhavan for another three to four days,'' Mahajan said.

The prime minister will be in the city from October 8 to 18, Mahajan said, adding that care would be taken to ensure that other patients of the hospital and vehicular traffic outside would not be affected during his stay. Arrangements would also be made for health bulletins to be provided to the media, he added.
