Paswan threatens to resign from Cabinet

Union Communication Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, on Tuesday, threatened to resign from the Cabinet if the zonal headquarters of the East Central Railway was shifted out of Hajipur (Bihar) or closed down.

"I have been doing the best for Bihar ever since I have been a member of Union Cabinet. I sanctioned creation of the new zonal headquarters for providing employment," he told a workers' conference organised by the Dalit Sena in Patna.

Paswan said any attempt to shift or close down the zonal headquarters at Hajipur, his home constituency, would not be tolerated and, "I will resign from the Council of Ministers if it happens."

Launching a veiled attack on Janata Dal (United) national president, Sharad Yadav and Union Agriculture Minister Nitish Kumar, Paswan said he would reconsider his decision to float a new party only if organisational elections (in the JD-U) took place and Sharad was removed.

Paswan said, "Enough is enough, I want internal democracy in the party. If the party leadership is changed I will reconsider my decision to float a new party."

Claiming that more than 95 per cent of the party workers, including the district officer bearers, had lent their support to his leadership, "I accept any challenge from any quarter with humility."

''You will soon see my support base,'' Paswan said warning his political opponents not to underestimate his popularity.

Six party legislators and two Members of Parliament from Bihar attended Tuesday's conference. Among the JD-U legislators who attended the meeting were Pashupati Kumar Parasa, Rama Singh, Narendra Singh, Virendra Singh, Ramsevak Hajari and Sushil Singh.

Two parliamentarians, Paswan's brother Ramchandra Paswan and Capt Jainarayan Nishad, also attended the meeting.

Paswan said, "I don't want the JD-U to become a 'B' team of the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal and, therefore, have to struggle hard to fight against the misgovernance of the present regime in Bihar. PTI
