Fiji coup leader Rabuka tipped as ambassador to US

Rabuka said he has not been approached but another source said Washington was being tardy about accepting the nomination.

The US embassy in Suva said on Tuesday it had not been officially approached by the interim administration on the matter. "We've not officially received any communication from the interim administration," an embassy spokesman said.

"The precedence exists that sometimes these issues take a considerable amount of time. It's not automatic," the embassy spokesman said.

It is understood, however, that high level approaches on Rabuka's nomination have been made at an unofficial level through the embassy in Suva but have not been favourably received.

Fiji's ambassador to Washington Napolioni Masirewa has returned to Suva leaving the post vacant.

Washington appears to be in no hurry to accept a successor possibly because of the upcoming presidential elections.
