Nandankanan lion dies while being shifted

A lion from the Nandankanan biological park and zoo died while being shifted to a zoo in Andhra Pradesh.

The 14-year-old African lion, which died of 'exhaustion' in Srikakulam district, had showed signs of weakness on Friday, when it was being shifted.

"The death is really shocking," a senior wildlife official of the state forest department admitted on Sunday.

The official wondered to how the zoo authorities chose to shift the lion even though it had shown signs of weakness. "Is it not cruelty against the animal?'' asked the official.

Thirteen felines from Nandankanan are being shifted to various zoos in AP.

"Since they are nervous and get agitated quickly, the shifting may have come as a shock. But since the animal showed signs of weakness, the authorities could have skipped its shifting," the official said.

The animals have to go through a number of medical and hygiene protocols before being transported.
