India must be more vocal, says Rajendra Chaudhary: PTI

The Indian government should be more vocal at international forums to bring the elected government of Fiji back to power, Rajendra Chaudhary, son of the ex-Fiji head of state, Mahendra Chaudhary, said in Bombay on Sunday.

Chaudhary told mediapersons that they had appealed to the Indian government to pursue the case of bringing back democracy in Fiji.

''India has been our most vocal supporter but the entire effort must be collective with more countries coming forward to take up our cause,'' Chaudhary, who is in Bombay to attend a meeting of the International Union of Socialists Youth (IUSY), said.

He said India cherished democracy because they know the value of democracy and have gone to great lengths to obtain it. ''If we do not value democracy, we cannot be called a civil society. Fiji cannot be called a civil society because of its past actions that were barbaric by any count,'' he added.

Appealing to the Indian media to support its cause, he alleged that the media in Fiji was extremely biased and tainted while reporting events in that country.

Chaudhary also clarified that he had not sought asylum in Australia but was there for medical treatment.

A solidarity meet to support the cause of Fiji, Bhutan and Burma will be held in Bombay on Monday by the Janata Dal (secular), according to its general secretary Kunwar Danish.
