E-Mail this report to a friend

Five intruders were killed as a major infiltration attempt was made by Pakistan, defence sources said on Saturday.

The heavily-armed militants tried to enter Kashmir valley in Kupwara district, the sources added.

They said troops noticed armed militants trying to sneak into the valley from across the border through Kamalhump post in Tangdhar-Karnah sector of Kupwara on Thursday evening.

The jawans confronted them, leading to a clash, the sources said, adding that Pakistani troops resorted to indiscriminate shelling on Indian positions to give fire-cover to the intruders.

Five militants were killed in the ensuing encounter till late Friday, they said.

The sources said Indian troops retaliated and intermittent shelling from both sides was continuing.

Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants, they said.
