Fresh violence in Dariapur

E-Mail this report to a friend

Police fired four rounds in the air and burst 34 teargas shells to disperse violent mobs indulging in stone throwing and arson in Delhi Chakla and Vadigam localities in the sensitive Dariapur area of Ahmedabad, where curfew was relaxed for ten hours on Wednesday.

Half a dozen policemen, including Assistant Commissioner N R Parmar, were injured in the stone throwing, police said.

A mob indulged in stone pelting and set fire to a scooter and a shop in the Delhi Chakla locality during the funeral procession of Shiv Sena worker Hardik Patel (16), who was injured in the police firing that followed the violence during the civic elections on Sunday.

Hardik, son of Sena candidate in Dariapur ward, Vinod Patel, succumbed to his injuries in a city hospital on Tuesday night, taking the toll in Sunday's poll violence to eight.

Police lobbed a dozen teargas shells to contain a stone pelting mob at Vadigam after the Sena worker's cremation.

The indefinite curfew clamped on Dariapur following Sunday's violence was relaxed from 0800 hours (IST) onwards on Wednesday. Tuesday's six-hour relaxation in curfew had passed off peacefully.
