Jaiswal replaces Khursheed as UPCC chief

E-Mail this report to a friend

Congress president Sonia Gandhi appointed Sri Prakash Jaiswal, Lok Sabha member from Kanpur, as Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president in place of Salman Khursheed, in a major move to strengthen the organisation in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.

Party spokesperson Ajit Jogi said in New Delhi that the decision would strengthen the party and such decisions were made whenever it was found necessary.

Jaiswal said as a grassroots worker he would be able to carry forward all sections of the party. He was confident that the party would be revamped to effectively contest elections within six months.

He said people in UP were willing to receive a united Congress and the desire for change was visible all over the state.

Jaiswal said his appointment and organisational elections should not be linked. In politics, appropriate changes were inevitable and such changes were made from time to time, he added.

A former mayor of Kanpur, Jaiswal had held several positions, including UPCC vice-president, general secretary, backward cell chairman and Kanpur DCC president. He was in the Congress-T for sometime.
