Situation in Ahmedabad peaceful, curfew continuesThe situation in the sensitive Dariapur locality of the walled city was under control on Monday even as an indefinite curfew continued without any relaxation in the area after Sunday's violence during the civic polls in which seven persons were killed. Police said a strict vigil was being maintained in the locality and no untoward incident was reported on Monday. A bandh was observed in the adjoining Kalupur area on a call given by local residents. Shopkeepers downed shutters in protest against the violence and arson in which seven persons were killed - six of them in police firing - and about 30 injured after groups of supporters of the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party clashed on Jordan Road over casting of 'bogus' votes. Seva Dal city unit chief Vasram Ravat was among the dead. Police fired 89 rounds to disperse the violent groups. Ten government vehicles and 12 shops were damaged in incidents of stone-pelting and arson, police said. Nine police personnel were injured in the stone-pelting, they added. A youth was stabbed to death on Sunday following an altercation over a poll-related issue in Jamalpur area of the city while an independent candidate, Ajmat Tyrewala, was injured in a mob attack on a booth in the sensitive Kalupur area of the city, police said.
