AMU students' involvement with extremists confirmed, says UP officialSharat Pradhan in Lucknow The involvement of a few students of the Aligarh Muslim University with a Kashmiri militant group has been confirmed, Uttar Pradesh principal home secretary V K Mittal told reporters in Lucknow on Wednesday. "Apart from tape-recorded confessions made by the recently-arrested AMU student Abdul Mobin, startling revelations were made in a complaint by a senior faculty member of the university, who was also a provost of one of the hostels," Mittal said. The Kashmir hostel provost Dr Sajid Ali Khan complained to the local police that he had received threats and claimed that an attempt was also made to murder him, for his refusal to allow unauthorised occupants in the hostel. Khan had named Chaudhary Mushir Khan, an arts student and Mohammad Athar Mansoor, a law student, of intimidating him and even firing a gun, while warning him to keep off. The students, who were alleged to have allowed four others to stay with them, first threatened the professor on phone. Later, they went to him and even fired a shot to terrorise him. The university authorities ordered immediate suspension of the two students. However, the police have yet to apprehend them. According to Mittal, "The university vice-chancellor, a former diplomat and the registrar, a serving IPS officer, were co-operating with the investigations." He said show cause notices had been issued to four of the 12 students 'wanted' by the police for the assault on an Intelligence Bureau official. "Actually, only four are regular students, while six of those named in the FIR are either rusticated or former students. The names of two others were mentioned wrongly", Mittal pointed out. The police have, however, failed to track down any on these suspects.
