Major's widow jumps off speeding trainThe widow of an Indian Army major, killed in an attack by separatists in Kashmir on Tuesday, committed suicide by jumping off a speeding train on Wednesday, The Hindustan Times reported. Jaya Pandey, wife of Major M K Pandey, committed suicide while on her way to Allahabad, where her husband's body was to arrive for cremation, the newspaper said. Pandey, who lives in a New Delhi suburb with her in-laws, was travelling with her husband's parents. She told them she wanted to go to the bathroom and then "jumped off the train." Her body was found near the railway tracks, the daily said, adding that the couple were married in 1998. According to the Indian Army, Pandey's husband was killed Tuesday with three other Indian soldiers after heavily armed militants staged a suicide attack on an army camp at Beerwah town, 35 km north of Srinagar. A police official who did not want to be named said the number of Indian soldiers killed in the attack was higher than the army was admitting. "Eleven Indian soldiers, including an officer, were killed in the firefight," he said. Lashkar-e-Tayiba, a Pakistan-based Muslim fundamentalist group, claimed responsibility for the operation. AFP
