8 killed in encounter in Udhampur

Eight persons -- four militants, three army men and a village defence committee member -- were killed at Mahore village in Udhampur district of Jammu & Kashmir in a fierce gun battle that continued late into the evening.

Police sources told rediff.com that troops raiding a militant hideout at Mahore came under heavy fire from the hidden extremists. Three soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed.

The troops returned the fire, killing four militants. The battle continued for several hours. One VDC member also died in the exchange.
