Militants trying to sabotage census in Jammu too

E-Mail this report to a friend

Mehboob Khan in Jammu

Militants, after threatening workers in Kashmir against carrying out census work, are now tying to sabotage the process in Jammu.

The Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Tayiba have warned the staff not to carry out enumeration work or face dire consequences. The threat has created panic among the 22,000-odd staff deputed for the work.

Reports from Banihal in Doda district said some posters bearing Hizb and Lashkar threats were found pasted on walls. The district administration immediately removed them.

In view of these threats, the staff in Banihal have refused to carry on with the second phase beginning Friday and to continue till September 30.

The district administration held meetings with the census staff and reviewed the situation. The administration assured the census staff that adequate security would be provided during the enumeration work. However, the employees were apprehensive that the militants might target them once the exercise is over and security is removed.

The second phase was to have started on Monday but following the threats the government decided to postpone it.
