Advani briefs President on West Bengal situation: PTI

E-Mail this report to a friend

Union Home Minister L K Advani Wednesday met President K R Narayanan and briefed him on the situation in West Bengal in the wake of clashes between ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist and Trinamul Congress activists in Midnapore district.

Advani, who was with the President for 20 minutes, also briefed him on the current visit of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the United States and other issues of national interest.

Official sources described the meeting as a ''courtesy call''.

The meeting assumes significance in the wake of Defence Minister George Fernandes' visit to West Bengal last week to assess the law and order situation and Advani's statement that all options including imposition of central rule were open as the situation was worse than in Bihar and the ''whole structure of the Constitution is under attack'' there.

Advani had earlier said that the Centre had sent three "advisories" to the state government for improving the situation but there had been no response so far.
