Woman killed, 12 injured in Pakistani shellingA woman was killed while 12 villagers were injured and 23 houses damaged during night-long shelling by Pakistani troops in the Uri sector. Official sources said in Baramulla Tuesday that Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked artillery and mortar shelling besides small-arms firing in Uri sector late Monday night, targeting both civilian areas and security installations. The villages of Nambla, Silikote and Hatlanga were the most affected. "A 40-year-old woman, Motia, died while another 12 were injured and about 23 houses were damaged. The injured have been admitted to hospital,'' an official spokesman said Tuesday morning, by which time the shelling had stopped. Indian troops retaliated, hitting a number of Pakistani bunkers and huts being used by ultras before infiltrating into the Indian side. The exact toll of casualties or damage suffered by the Pakistan troops was yet to be known. Officials believe that Pakistani troops have intensified shelling from across the border as they wanted to push as many militants into the Indian side as possible before the infiltration routes close when snow starts to fall. ''This is just to give cover to the infiltrators,'' the spokesman said, adding that the Indian security forces were on the alert to scuttle any Pakistani design. In the last month, more than a dozen persons, including some security personnel, have lost their lives and scores of people were injured in several rounds of Pakistan shelling in the northern sector.
