The lessons BJP leaders learnt on the Internet

Rajendra Singh Rana, president of the Gujarat unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party experienced the real power of the Internet on Friday.

A 1400 hours IST he was scheduled to join a chat on the state BJP's website.

Several enthusiastic party workers milled around the venue.

But before Rana could start chatting with the genuine surfers the chartroom was flooded with the abuses, nasty comments and defamatory notes.

The media cell of BJP had arranged the chat in an open chat room where screening of comments is not possible.

It resulted in chaos. It seemed that several of the BJP's opponents had joined the chat. At one point around 30 users bombarded the site with questions, blocking it. When some questioners were "blocked" they logged in with new names. The chat turned interesting when BJP sympathisers started abusing the "nasty chatters" and even called them "Bajarangdalis"!

The political atmosphere in the state is hotting up with corporation and panchayat elections round the corner. The BJP is facing stiff opposition, not only from the Congress, but also its own rebels.

The fury of the anti-BJP netizens has shaken Rana. Bharat Pandya, party spokesperson and MLA, told rediff.com, "Our media cell is always ready for innovation. We wanted to reach the people through the Internet, so we arranged the chat. You should appreciate our readiness to face the people. The Congress is not ready to show up before the people!"
