Iceland President arrives
on week-long visit

Iceland President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, on a week-long visit to India, was given a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan Monday morning.

President K R Narayanan, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Home Minister L K Advani were among those present when Grimsson arrived and was given a guard of honour.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was unable to attend as he is recuperating from his recent knee operation.

Grimsson, accompanied by Foreign Minister Halldor Asgrimsson and several senior officials, arrived on Saturday for the visit, the first high level contact between the two countries.

Later in the day, Vice-President Krishan Kant and Urban Development Minister Jagmohan will call on Grimsson at Rashtrapati Bhavan. It will be followed by lunch hosted by the Vice-President in honour of the visiting dignitary.

Vajpayee will also meet him in the evening.

Before meeting Vajpayee, Grimsson will inaugurate a festival of films from Iceland. Prior to the inauguration, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sonia Gandhi will call on him.

Grimsson will call on Narayanan later. Narayanan will host a banquet in his honour.

On Tuesday, Grimsson will interact with the Confederation of Indian Industry. He will then leave for the tourist city of Agra, famous for its marble monument of the Taj Mahal.

Grimssson will visit Bombay on November 1 to inaugurate the festival of films from Iceland. An India-Iceland business seminar will be organised by FICCI in Bombay on November 1 to coincide with the visit.

He will leave for Reykjavik on November 3.
